What is ISO 50001?

ISO 50001 is the international standard for Energy Management Systems (EnMS), designed to help organisations improve energy performance, increase efficiency, and reduce costs.

Data-Driven Energy Control

Unlike other standards that focus purely on management, ISO 50001 is unique because it requires organisations to demonstrate actual improvement in energy performance. It turns energy from a "fixed" overhead into a manageable variable.

The standard ensures your organisation knows exactly where its energy goes, how much it costs, and how to reduce consumption systematically through the Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle.

  •   Energy baseline and performance indicators
  •   Significant Energy Use (SEU) identification
  •   Measurable objectives and targets
  •   Continuous performance improvement

Energy Performance Indicators (EnPIs)

⚡ kWh per Unit

Energy consumed per unit produced or service delivered

🏢 kWh per m²

Energy intensity per square metre of facility

📈 Baseline Comparison

Performance tracked against established reference point

ESOS & SECR Compliance

ISO 50001 is the gold standard route for UK regulatory compliance

ESOS Compliance

Organisations fully certified to ISO 50001 across their entire estate are considered to have automatically met the requirements of the Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme. No separate ESOS audits required.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is ISO 50001 a legal requirement in the UK?

No, ISO 50001 is voluntary. However, it is a legally recognized route for ESOS compliance. Large UK organisations that are fully certified do not need to carry out the mandatory ESOS audits required by the Environment Agency.

What is the difference between ISO 14001 and ISO 50001?

ISO 14001 looks at overall environmental impact (waste, recycling, pollution) while ISO 50001 is a "deep dive" into energy. ISO 14001 might ask if you have an energy policy; ISO 50001 requires you to prove through data that your energy efficiency is improving.

Do we need to install new meters for ISO 50001?

Not necessarily, but you must have enough data to identify your Significant Energy Uses (SEUs). If you have only one main meter, sub-meters or clamp-on meters are often recommended. The cost is usually recovered quickly through the waste they help identify.

How does ISO 50001 help with Net Zero targets?

Energy consumption is usually the largest contributor to Scope 1 and Scope 2 carbon emissions. By systematically reducing energy use, you directly reduce your carbon footprint. The standard makes Net Zero claims credible and verifiable by third-party auditors.

Will ISO 50001 reduce our energy bills immediately?

In many cases, yes. The Energy Review process often uncovers immediate wastage - equipment left on over weekends, compressed air leaks, incorrect boiler settings. These operational controls require zero capital investment but lead to immediate reductions.

How long does ISO 50001 certification take?

For most UK SMEs, implementation takes 6-12 months. This is necessary because the standard requires you to establish an Energy Baseline and collect enough data to demonstrate that your EnMS is functioning. If you already have ISO 14001, the process may be shorter.

How Much Does ISO 50001 Cost?

The cost of ISO 50001 certification varies based on several factors. Some consultants and certifiers adopt charging models based on the project's complexity, company size, and sometimes even the company's turnover.

At Certigence, our pricing is straightforward, calculated by multiplying an agreed day rate by the number of days work. This is based on the work to be done, mitigated by any the company has done already or will be doing internally. This ensures clarity and transparency, giving you a clear understanding of the commitment before the project commences.

We provide a free telephone or Zoom consultation with one of our consultants to find out enough about your organisation to be able to make a formal proposal without charge or obligation. This allows you to research costs for free before making any commitments!

3

Initial Assessment (Stage 1): Ensuring Systems Meet Standard

The certifier reviews that systems cover all relevant parameters correctly. You may choose to have our consultant present during the initial assessment to assist with any questions the certifier may have.

4

Final Evaluation (Stage 2): Achieving Certification

The consultant ensures internal audit, management review, and training aspects are covered. The certifier conducts the conclusive Stage 2 assessment, verifying operational systems' alignment with Standard requirements. Upon successful completion, you attain Certification.
